Long-Term Disability: Protecting Yourself from the Unexpected

Long-term disability is one of those policies that’s easy to brush off upon first thought. Not many folks like to sit and think about what could go wrong in their life, much less about being dependent on an insurance policy to help them stay financially afloat after a dire situation occurs. Some people are covered by life insurance alone through their full-time jobs and think that either short-term disability insurance or long-term disability insurance is not worth investing in. However, more Americans are finding out that some coverage is worth spending a little extra on, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.

COVID-19 has affected healthcare around the world, but this pandemic has specifically jolted the American healthcare system. As a result, the Health Care and Human Services Department of the United States Government has had to reevaluate and redefine some rules and guidelines specifically altered to have COVID-19 survivors in mind. For example, they have had to publish updated guidance on the unique disability called “Long COVID,” a condition where people infected with the virus can experience a range of ongoing symptoms that can last weeks or months after they are infected. These symptoms and impairments can include damage to the lungs, heart, kidneys, brain, and circulatory system, along with mental health conditions and lingering emotional illness.

Luckily, “Long COVID” is being recognized as a condition under Titles II and III (state and local government and public accommodations) of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) due to the ongoing health issue. As a result, Americans who are now limited in major life activities are being protected from discrimination and can legally be provided resources, including long-term disability. This is good news for workers across the nation, and especially workers in the manufacturing and labor fields. Now they are not being left to their own devices during a tough time in the world.

With disease variants popping up every few months, now is the time, more than ever, to ensure you have the right coverage in place in case the worst were to happen with one of these variants. In addition, long-term disability coverage can keep you and your family out of financial crisis during a time when you need to focus on getting healthy and staying safe.
